PRINCESS MANDALIKA

Once upon a time, in a kingdom of Sekar Kuning lived a
strong and couregous king. Together with his queen the king ruled the country
justly and wisely. In addition, the people were peaceful and properous. The
most waited day had come. The queen gave birth to a beautiful baby daughter.
Both king and queen were very happy. They named her Princess Mandalika.
One day, the king
fell ill and suddenly passed away. The peaceful situation turned of disorder.
Princess Mandalika to be the successor of the king. All people accepted the
proposal. Princess Mandalika was later made queen and ruled Sekar Kuning
kingdom.
Meanwhile, in the west side of Sekar Kuning kingdom, King
Johor was the ruler. His kingdom was
called Sawing and he was also assisted by a Patih. To the east of Sekar Kuning
kingdom, stood Lipur kingdom ruled by King Bumbang. The king also had a patih.
The two kings hadn’t married yet.
One day, King Johor talked to his Patih. The king wanted
to hear from his Patih wheter he had complaints to the king.
Johor’s Patih : “Im sorry Your Majesty, I think all
peoplelive prosperously and peacefully. But there is one thing that we are
worried about.”
King Johor :
“What’s That?.......Just tell me, I will listen to your complaints’
Johor’s Patih :
“Well, Your Highness......we.....we....we don’t see any sign that Your Highness
is making plans to get married. It wouldn’t be good for a great king like not
to have a queen.”
King Johor :
“Alright. What is your further proposal? Is there any one suitable tobe my
queen?”
Johor’s Patih :
“Forgive me Your Majesty, I heard that there is a princess named Princess
Mandalika who ruled the neighboring kingdom, Sekar Kuning. The princess is very
beautiful, clever and rules the people wisely. Besides, she is still single”
King Johor :
“So, what should I do?”
Johor’s patih : “I
will deliver your proposal and will leave early in the morning tomorrow for
Sekar Kuning kingdom”
King Johor :
“Alright.”
The Patih soon prepare the proposal for Princess Mandalika.
It was the same
case in Lipur kingdom situated in the east side of Princess Mandalika’s
kingdom. King Bumbang, talked to his Patih. The king wanted to hear from his
Patih wheter he had complaints to the king.
King Bumbang :
“What’s news? Whether had any problem there?”
Bumbang’s Patih : “Im sorry Your Majesty, I think all
peoplelive prosperously and peacefully. But there is one thing that we are
worried about.”
King Bumbang : “What’s that? Just tell me”
Bumbang’s patih : “Well, Your
Highness, we don’t see any sign that Your Highness is making plans to get
married. It wouldn’t be good for a great king like not to have a queen.”
King Bumbang :“Hmmm
alright, Is there any one suitable tobe my queen?”
Bumbang’s Patih :
“I am sorry Your Majesty. I heard that there is a princess named Princess
Mandalika who ruled the neighboring kingdom, Sekar Kuning. The princess is very
beautiful, clever and rules the people wisely.”
King Bumbang :
“So, what should I do?”
Bumbang’s Patih :
“Well, Your Highnes. Tomorrow, early morning i will bring your proposal to
Princess Mandalika.”
King Bumbang :
“Alright, do it perfect!”
The Patih soon prepare the proposal for Princess
Mandalika.
The next day, the Patih
from Sawing kindom and from the Lipur kingdom left almost at the same time from
their kingdoms. They arrived at Sekar Kuning kingdom. The patih of King Bumbang
arrived earlier. The Patih bring King Bumbang’s proposal to Princess Mandalika.
Bumbang’s Patih :
“Forgive me Your Majesty. I am here to give this from my King, King Bumbang.”
Mandalika :
“Alright, let me see”
Bumbang’s Patih :
(give the proposal to Mandalika)
Mandalika : “Wait a moment here”
Bumbang’s Patih :
“Thanks, Your Majesty”
Mandalika read the proposal from King Bumbang. After
that, she write her answer in blank paper. And then, she give her answer to the
Patih of King Bumbang.
Mandalika :
“This, please give to your King”
Bumbang’s Patih :
“Of Course, Your Majesty. I will do that”
After that, the Patih of King Bumbang leave the Sekar
Kuning Kingdom and return to Lipur Kingdom. After some time, the Patih of King
Johor arrived at Sekar Kuning kingdom. Like Bumbang’s Patih, the Patih of King
Johor bring the proposal from his King too.
Johor’s Patih :
“Forgive me Your Majesty. I am from Sawing kingdom. I am here to give this from
my King, King Johor”
Mandalika :
“Alright, let me see”
Johor’s Patih :
(give the proposal to Mandalika)
Mandalika :
“Wait a moment here”
Mandalika read the proposal from King Johor. After that,
she write her answer in blank paper. And then, she give her answer to the Patih
of King Johor.
Mandalika :
“This, please give to your King”
Johor’s Patih :
“Of Course, Your Majesty. I will do that”
After that, the Patih of King Johor leave the Sekar
Kuning Kingdom and return to Sawing Kingdom.
Arriving at their
respective kingdom, each ambassador met their king. Both kings received
Princess Mandalika’s answer with pounding heart. And what happened? They were
both sad after reading Princess Mandalika’s answer. The princess rejected their
proposal of marriage. She thought that she was not old enough to marry and
still wanted to be near her people.
Princess Mandalika in
Sekar Kuning kingdom was great sorrow. The princess had been bothered by the
result of her own refusal. On one side, if she accepted the proposal of King
Bumbang, it would have made King Johor angry. On the other, if she accepted
King Johor’s proposal, it would have made King Bumbang revengeful. Since all
proposals of the two kings were rejected, the two kings might get angry. She
was concerned that her kingdom might be engaged in war with the two neighboring
kingdoms. All people would suffer.
Fortunately, the princess
finally found a wise solution. The previous night she dreamt that her grandfather
came to pay a visit. In her dream, he said,
“Wars could be
avoided if you are willing to sacrifice yourself”
Her grandfather later expalined further what she should do. The next day,
Princess Mandalika asked her Patih to meet King Bumbang and King Johor. She
invited the two kings and all their people to come to Sekar Kuning. The first
patih went east and the second headed for the west to deliver the invitation of
the princess.
On the given day, the two
kings arrived at Princess Mandalika’s kingdom. They wondered why the princess
invited them. Nobody knew. Both kings were later welcomed by Princess
Mandalika.
Mandalika :
“Well, King Bumbang and King Johor, after reconsidering my answer, I decided to
accept your proposals. I will surrender my self at the time I have decided.
Please come again with your people on the tenth month. I want to make sure
tahat all people will see the event.”
And both kings later
returnned to their respective kingdom.
Days passed, the decided
time had come. Early in the morning both kings with their own people left their
country. In accordance with Princess Mandalika’s request, they all headed for
the beach. When all groups of the two kingdoms and all people of Sekar Kuning
kingdom arrived at the beach, the princess was not seen.
Soon, Princess Mandalika
appeared standing on a stone. The princess looked very beautiful and shining.
Mandalika :
“I’ve come to surrender myself. But not only to the two kings who proposed me,
but to all people who are present”
Suddenly a very big wave came to swallow up Princesss
Mandalika who was standing on the stone. Instantly, princess Mandalika
disappeared, washed away by the wave. It happened so fast. It was beyond the
expectation of both kings who saw the happening. When they realized the
accident, all people were instructed to look for the princess. They hurriedly
flung themselves into the sea. But no one could find Princess mandalika’s body.
They only found small sea creatures like worms, groupig
together, and shining like a rainbow. These looked so beautiful. It was
believed that Princess Mandalika had incarnated into the sea creature. This sea
creature later became a useful food for the people when it was cooked and
dried. This might have been the intention of Princess Mandalika when she said
that she would surrender herself for the sake of mankind.
Since that time, Princess Mandalika was called Princess
Mandalika Nyale. Nyale means ‘to shine’. According to local people, on February
and March along Kuta beach located in Tanjung Aan many wormlike sea creatures
are found. The sea creature was also called Nyale.
That is the origin of Nyale according to the folk tale from Lombok Island
of West Nusa Tenggara Province.
